Brigadier Mike Tanner OBE RM


A serving officer, Mike joined the Royal Marines in 1989. His Lieutenant Colonel appointments include EA to the Second Sea Lord, Commanding Officer of Commando Training and author of the Royal Marines 2010 SDSR communications strategy. He is currently Chief of Staff Navy Command (HQ).

He took command of 45 Commando Group in January 2012 and deployed the Commando soon after on HMS Illustrious. He holds a Masters (MA) degree in Defence Studies (Kings College).

He was awarded a Presidential citation and the US Bronze Star with Combat Valour decoration for his part in the assault into An Nasiriyah in 2003, and a Queen’s Commendation for Valuable Service for his time in Iraq in 2005.

He is a former professional rugby player with Richmond RFC, with international caps at England U21 and the Combined Services. Other interests include sea kayaking, classical music, gardening, learning to paint, weight lifting and renovating the family’s Victorian home in Lee-On-The-Solent. Mike is married to Helen; they have three very busy children and a black Labrador who believes he is also Commando trained. Previously he was Captain of the Base Portsmouth and in 2016 appointed as Commandant of the Commando Training Centre Lympstone.
