On 16 July 2025, the crew of HMS Astute brought an operational chapter to a proud close with a day of celebration at HMS Drake which included a very special ceremony in which the Royal Navy appointed Her Majesty the Queen as Vice Admiral of the United Kingdom. The day also marked both the End of Commission and a long-awaited homecoming for HMS Astute. Over 400 people including Serving RN families, VVIPs and senior Royal Navy personnel came together to recognise the submarine’s service and the safe return of her crew from deployment.
The day began with a family-focused Garden Party on the Wardroom lawn, complete with live music from a five-piece jazz band. It was a moment for reconnection and reflection – a chance for families to welcome loved ones back after time away at sea.
In the evening, a traditional Mess-style dinner took place in HMS Drake’s Senior Rates’ Mess Hall. With speeches, formal toasts and camaraderie, the event honoured not only those serving on HMS Astute, but the steadfast support of those who waited for them at home.
Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) was proud to support the event. As ever, our mission is to stand alongside the Naval family – recognising the sacrifices of service and ensuring moments like these are marked in a meaningful way.
HMS Astute has made a significant contribution to the Submarine Service, and her End of Commission was a fitting tribute to a chapter of dedication, professionalism and resilience for the crew and their families alike.
