Sarah and Fran, are swapping their usual day-to-day for a thrilling cross-country challenge, all in aid of Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity. The pair have signed up for Race Across the UK, a test of endurance, teamwork, and good humour!
Race Across the UK invites participants to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, travelling from Edinburgh to Dartmouth without map apps, cars or planes - relying solely on their wits, a map, and what they can carry - all to raise vital funds in support of Naval families.
With a friendship that spans over two decades, Sarah and Fran have always thrived on adventure and stepping outside their comfort zones. Sarah, who served in the Women’s Royal Naval Service (Wrns), now works as the Business Development Lead for DS Smith, a role that sees her frequently travelling across the globe. Fran is a seasoned restaurateur and owner of AleOli y Tu, a vibrant tapas spot in Shrewsbury, inspired by her time in Spain.
“Signing up for Race Across the UK felt like the perfect mix of adventure and purpose,” says Fran. “We love travel, a bit of chaos, and doing something that really makes a difference. Supporting RNRMC ticks every box.”
Sarah’s naval background makes her mission feel deeply personal. “The Royal Navy has always had a place in my heart,” Sarah explains. “I’ve seen first-hand how vital charities like this are to the wellbeing of service personnel, veterans, and their loved ones."
The pair is embracing the challenge with characteristic energy and humour. From quiz nights and community socials to support from Fran’s restaurant network, they’ve sparked a ton of enthusiasm among friends, family, and the local community. “It’s turning into a real team effort,” Fran says. “Everyone’s getting involved and cheering us on - it's been incredible.”
As for what they’re looking forward to? “The adventure!” says Sarah. “The unexpected twists, the people we’ll meet, the places we’ll see. And let’s be honest, we’re a tiny bit competitive, so we’re also eyeing that finish line!”
Their message for anyone considering Race Across the UK? “Just say yes. You don’t need to be a super athlete, just come with a sense of adventure and a willingness to laugh through the chaos. You’ll leave with amazing memories and the knowledge that you’ve helped an extraordinary cause.”
Sarah and Fran are proud to support RNRMC on their journey. “The work RNRMC does is nothing short of life changing,” says the pair. “They’re there for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines community through every stage - offering support, comfort, and care when it’s needed most. We’re incredibly proud to be fundraising for a charity that gives so much back to those who’ve given so much for others.”
