Team Barrow Takes On Race Across the UK for Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity

Event, Fundraising, General

Friends, colleagues and proud supporters of the naval community, Janet and Laura – known collectively as Team Barrow – are stepping well outside their comfort zones as they gear up to take part in Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity’s Race Across the UK Challenge.

The challenge is open to everyone – both military and civilian. Participants will embark on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, travelling from Edinburgh to Dartmouth without map apps, cars or planes - relying solely on their wits, a map, and what they can carry - to raise vital funds in support of Naval families facing life-changing injuries, mental health challenges, and financial hardship.

Both Janet and Laura work in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria in roles that have long inspired deep respect and admiration for those who serve. When the opportunity arose to join the challenge in support of RNRMC, the pair signed up without hesitation. They both have strong connections with the Submariner community and feel privileged to represent such a meaningful cause.

Every submariner, sailor and marine has their own story and differing needs for support, and RNRMC is there making sure no one in the naval community is left behind.

The Race Across the UK Challenge will push participants physically and mentally, and for Team Barrow, that’s all part of the excitement.

“We’re looking forward to every bit of it,” the team said. “It’s completely out of our comfort zones – we have no idea what to expect! But we’re excited to meet the other participants, hear their stories, and be part of something special.”

Their fundraising efforts are going well with the local community getting behind their efforts. One standout event, a lively afternoon at Janet’s, filled with food, music, games and prizes, raised a remarkable £500 in just one day. “Everyone has been so generous,” said Janet. “And we’ve had a lot of fun putting it all together!”

To anyone considering taking on the challenge, Team Barrow has one piece of advice: just do it.

“We’ve spoken to loads of people who’d love to take part – honestly, just go for it. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We don’t have a set plan, but we’ll give it our best shot and enjoy the ride!”
