Navy Mates Take on Race Across the UK – Armed with Friendship, Stamina and Questionable Navigation Skills
Cameron and Matthew, two Royal Navy mates are swapping ships for train timetables (and maybe a few wrong turns) as they take on Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity’s Race Across the UK.
United by years of service, and a shared love of pubs, this dynamic duo is ready to hustle their way across the country for a brilliant cause. Having met during training, the pair quickly became fast friends, bonded by military life and a thirst for adventure.
“Even though we’ve been posted to opposite ends of the country, we’ve always made time to catch up,” they said. “Usually over a pint or two. This challenge seemed like the perfect way to carry on that tradition - just with a lot more walking and a lot less sleep.”
Drawn to the spirit of the Race - no map, no set route, and every chance of getting lost - they saw the challenge as the perfect chance to raise money for RNRMC.
We’ve seen first-hand just how much the charity does to support those in uniform and their families. It’s great to be able to give something back - other than our dignity when we inevitably board the wrong train.
With big hopes and a modest budget, the team is keen to find creative ways to stretch their funds, while friends and family have already rallied around to support their mission.
“They’ve been incredibly generous. Either that or they’re just excited to watch us try and navigate train routes and see how lost we get.”
Their message to anyone thinking of signing up? “Do it. The more, the merrier - just don’t expect to beat us. Unless, of course, you’ve figured out how buses work. In which case… fair play.”
Also, “RNRMC does amazing work supporting service families through tough times. This is a fun way to help ensure that support continues. Plus, it beats doing press-ups for sponsorship.”
