Neighbours from Devizes (Wiltshire) are gearing up for the challenge of a lifetime as they take part in Race Across the UK, all in support of Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC).
Michelle Westwood, a trustee of RNRMC, and her teammate Gemma will travel from Edinburgh to Dartmouth without map apps or planes - relying solely on their wits, a map, and what they can carry - all to raise vital funds in support of Naval families.
Gemma and I are big believers in stepping outside your comfort zone. This is an amazing opportunity to test your teamwork, navigation skills, and sense of humour – all while supporting a fantastic cause,” said Michelle. “As a veteran, RN spouse, and parent, my whole family has benefited from the charity. I know first-hand the incredible work RNRMC does and I want to help ensure that work continues for future generations.
Inspired by a mutual love of adventure and a long-standing joke about entering Race Across the World, Michelle and Gemma saw Race Across the UK as the perfect fit - combining excitement, a worthy cause, and a time frame compatible with everyday life.
“We’re both quite competitive and love doing something a bit different,” Michelle said. “A couple of years ago we completed the Sarsen trail, 26-miles between Avebury and Stonehenge, to raise money for Anthony Nolan. That really cemented our team spirit and made this the natural next step.”
Michelle’s deep connection to the Royal Navy gives the challenge personal resonance. Her husband currently serves as a warfare officer; both his parents and both of his brothers-in-law have also served. While Gemma doesn’t have a direct link to the military, her commitment to the cause and the friendship they share has created a formidable partnership.
The team is particularly looking forward to tackling the unknown checkpoints and embracing the challenge’s logistical twists. “The unpredictability is all part of the adventure,” Michelle added.
To raise funds, Gemma recently completed the Swansea Half Marathon and received generous support from friends, family, and local businesses. Michelle’s employer has also contributed, and the team is continuing to spread the word in their community.
Michelle offered some encouraging words for anyone considering a future challenge: “Absolutely – do it! You’ll come away with memories, stories and the knowledge that you've made a real difference!”
All funds raised will go directly to RNRMC, helping to support serving personnel, veterans, and their families across the Royal Navy and Royal Marines community.
