Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) is supporting the 2025 Junior Leaders Field Gun (JLFG) competition — a dynamic event that builds leadership, resilience, and teamwork in young people aged 16–24 across the Armed Forces.
The year saw the HMS Sultan crew take home the winning trophy along with DSLA taking home Plate 1. Both teams showed immense amount of courage, discipline and team work to ensure that they came out on top in their respective heats.
First launched in 2006, JLFG is designed to develop the next generation of military leaders through disciplined training, physical challenge, and strong teamwork. Participants include young personnel from Royal Navy training establishments, Army and RAF units, University Royal Naval Units (URNU), University Technical Colleges, Cadet organisations, local colleges, and industry partners.
As part of its ongoing commitment to youth development within the Naval Service, RNRMC has awarded a grant to support key elements of the competition. This includes the production of team shirts bearing the charity’s logo, helping to create a sense of unity among participants while promoting the charity’s work across the wider Defence community.
Alice Farrow, RNRMC Director of Marketing and Communications, said:
The Junior Leaders Field Gun competition is an inspiring initiative that reflects the values we stand for — commitment, courage, leadership and community. Watching these young people grow in confidence and character is exactly why we do what we do. This grant is more than financial support; it’s an investment in the future of the Naval Service and the young leaders who will shape it.
The 2025 competition is set to expand, with new teams joining along with returning crews from HMS Raleigh and Sultan. Each team includes 18 competitors and additional crew members, judges and support staff — totalling up to 28 participants per crew.
JLFG continues to contribute to recruitment, retention, and public engagement, while reinforcing the leadership qualities essential to the Armed Forces. With continued support from RNRMC and senior Royal Navy leadership, the competition is poised to make an even greater impact in 2025.
