Support for Commonwealth Trainees and Families at Worthy Down and Across Portsmouth Naval Community

General, Serving Personnel

A new dedicated pastoral worker, provided by Aggies, has been deployed to Worthy Down Defence College of Logistics (DCL) to support the growing number of Royal Navy Phase 2 trainees from non-UK and Commonwealth backgrounds. With trainee numbers rising from 45 to over 130—many from countries such as Kenya—this vital role offers one-to-one support, guidance, and a listening ear to those struggling with training setbacks, loneliness, or adapting to life far from home.

The pastoral worker has become a trusted presence on base, building meaningful relationships with both staff and trainees. By visiting accommodation blocks, she tailors her support to individual needs, offering advice, running small group discussions, and signposting to additional resources.

In parallel, the Royal Navy’s Immigration Advisor has expanded her outreach through drop-in sessions across Portsmouth naval establishments and family accommodation areas. She provides up-to-date briefings for divisional officers and is seeing increased demand as more families move to the UK under new immigration rules. Daily calls now come from spouses and partners seeking advice on visas, income thresholds, and integration into UK life.

Her role has evolved into that of a social prescriber—connecting families to services covering everything from schooling and housing to training and employment—helping build stronger, more informed communities.

These initiatives reflect the Royal Navy’s  and charities growing commitment to the welfare and integration of its increasingly international personnel and their families.
