This September, Vincent and Henry from Rochester, Kent, will embark on Race Across the UK, a four-day physical and mental endurance challenge designed to test resilience, team spirit, and determination.
Vincent and Henry will travel from Edinburgh to Dartmouth without the use of map apps, cars or planes - relying solely on their wits, a map, and what they can carry on their back - all to raise vital funds in support of Naval families.
Henry, an active member of the Sea Cadet Corps, was immediately drawn to Race Across the UK. “The competition sparked my interest right away,” he said. “After a few conversations with my father, we were up for the challenge. We've shared many moments over the years, especially camping together. The opportunity to spend four days competing against other teams, and more importantly, challenging ourselves, is not something we wanted to miss.”
For Vincent and Henry, the event is more than just a competition, it’s a deeply personal journey. With a long-standing family connection to the Royal Navy, taking part is an opportunity to honour generations of service, while creating lasting memories together.
My family has had ties with the Royal Navy for generations, with relatives on both sides having served during the Second World War.
The family legacy includes Great Great Grandfather Henry Bailey, who served on various ships including HMS Pembroke, and Ewart Hawksworth – affectionately known as ‘Sailor Bill’.
The past few years have been particularly hard for the pair, having lost both of Henry’s grandfathers and, more recently, his great grandfather, which brought a renewed perspective and appreciation for seizing life’s opportunities.
“We know it’ll be tough,” said Henry, “but what keeps us going is knowing that at the finish line, my grandmother and mother will be waiting for us, though hugs might need to wait until we’ve cleaned up!”
Vincent and Henry are determined to give back to the Naval community through their participation.
“This race is a way to honour the memories of those we’ve lost. We’ll carry them with us every step and stage of the journey”, they said. “As J.R.R. Tolkien put it, 'It is not the strength of the body that counts, but the strength of the spirit."
