Mabel joined the Wrens in 1943, aged just 17, leaving home to become a Wren Steward based at HMS Daedalus in Lee-on-the-Solent. Her time in uniform was short-lived — she was discharged on compassionate grounds to return home and care for her mother, while her father continued serving in the Royal Navy.
Though her active service ended early, Mabel has always looked back with pride at her role in supporting the wartime effort. Her commitment to duty extended beyond the Navy, and she has remained part of the naval family throughout her life.
