Ken served in the Royal Navy in multiple ships and shore establishments during World War II. After completing his training at HMS Royal Arthur, Ken served on HMS Valkyrie, HMS Boxer, and several other ships.
Although the war ended as HMS Boxer reached the Suez, Ken continued his service with time spent at HMS Collingwood, Fort Southwick, and HMS Mercury. He had brief stints aboard HMS Orwell, HMS Ranee, and finally HMS Indefatigable.
