WO1 Carl Steedman - The Warrant Officer to the Royal Navy


Warrant Officer 1 ‘Speedy’ Steedman joined the Royal Navy as a Radio Operator in May 1991 and attended the School of communications at HMS MERCURY undergoing specialist training before his first seagoing job in HMS MANCHESTER.
He was selected for transfer to the Warfare branch as an Operator Mechanic in October 1993 and headed back to sea for three years in HMS INVINCIBLE, conducting back to back operational deployments in the Adriatic before attending Leading Hands’ Career Course in 1997. As part of HMS OCEAN’s initial crew, he brought her out of build and into the fleet and conducted operations in both Belize and Sierra Leone during his tenure.  Completing Petty Officer’s career course in 2001, he then joined the Type 42 Destroyer HMS EDINBURGH at short notice as the Petty Officer Communications in early December 2001.  During an extremely busy operational period he served in the combat phase of the 2nd Gulf War (Operation TELIC) when he spent over 4 months continuously at sea.  An assignment to NATO COMMCEN at Northwood followed. Promoted to Chief Petty Officer in October 2006, he joined the Maritime Battle Staff to prepare for the UK command of Task Force 158, the coalition force protecting Iraq’s offshore oil infrastructure. He subsequently operated from the Khawr al Amaya Oil Terminal as the N6 Manager, coordinating operations in the Northern Arabian Gulf (NAG).  During an 18 month period, he served over 11 months in the NAG.  Following a 2-year posting to Whitehall, he returned to the fleet as the Communications Manager for HMS DRAGON, the fourth Type 45 and the first to be fully DII maritime deployed fitted.  Promoted to Warrant Officer first class in 2011 he joined the CIS Training unit at HMS COLLINGWOOD as the Warrant Officer of the School overseeing the increased IS training being delivered to the Royal Navy.  He was appointed as J6 WO Comms in the Joint Force Headquarters in July 2013.  During his time in the UK’s Extremely High Readiness Operational HQ, he was deployed at short notice on several live Operations with OLRTs; these included Op SHADER and Op WEALD as well as supporting a 200 strong JTFHQ during major NATO and National exercises. In September 2015, he returned to HMS OCEAN as the Executive Warrant Officer on the Fleet Flagship. In his 30 months on-board the ship spent over 440 days at sea, providing the base for embarked Battle Staffs in several exercises, including the largest NATO exercise held for 20 years, and conducting operations on Joint Expeditionary Force (Maritime) and in the Gulf with Commander Task Force 50. In August 17 Ocean deployed again as part of a NATO task group but early on was re-tasked to conduct HADR as part of Op Ruman in the Caribbean before re-joining the task group as the Flagship. After decommissioning OCEAN, he joined Excellent as Base Warrant Officer in April 2018. Having spent 17 months in that post was selected for the role of WORN in Jan 2020. WO1 Steedman is married to Katharine and they have two highly active children; Emma and Joe.
