Sir Alan joined the Maritime & Coastguard Agency in 2010, following a career in the Royal Navy in which he commanded a number of warships and served on the Navy and Admiralty Boards.

The MCA is responsible for the safety of shipping in UK waters, the efficient administration of UK seafarers and the UK-flagged merchant fleet, and for maritime emergency response delivered through Her Majesty’s Coastguard. Since taking over as CEO, Alan has overseen major reforms to HM Coastguard and the absorption of all UK-based search and rescue helicopters under MCA command and control. The Agency is currently overhauling its nationwide vessel survey and inspection capability, whilst also striving to grow the UK merchant fleet in support of the nation’s maritime economy.

Alan is a qualified teacher, a linguist, and a keen sportsman.
