Rear Admiral Alex Burton became Commander UK Maritime Forces in Jan 2016. He is also Rear Admiral Surface Ships (RASS), responsible for providing independent advice on the fighting prowess and moral component of the surface ship community. 

His early career was spent in a variety of warships in many theatres of operations including the Gulf, Far East, Falklands and Caribbean and he has enjoyed three Commands: HMS Inverness, HMS Northumberland and HMS Bulwark, the Fleet Flagship. He has undertaken appointments in Permanent Joint Headquarters, the Ministry Of Defence and Navy Command Headquarters, and in his last job he was responsible for the development and delivery to market of the majority of the Royal Navy’s surface capability including the Type 26 Global Combat Ship. 

Alex is married to Helen, a university law lecturer, and they have two children. He is a mentor for Durham University undergraduates, at the university where he gained a degree. He is an ally to RN LGBT personnel and Vice President of the GB Armed Forces Rugby League as well as President of the RN Rugby League.
