How the charity helps, serving, naval personnel, veterans and their families

Norton Home Headley Court provides free accommodation and dedicated staff on site to help with advice and emotional support for severely injured, wounded and sick Servicing or ex-Service naval personnel and their families.

Royal Marines Corporal Richard, Norton Home Headley Court beneficiary

Following a tragic cliff accident, Richard suffered a significant brain injury as well as multiple broken bones and bruising throughout his body. He has been at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) at Headley Court for treatment since August 2015. During this time, Richard’s wife Hayley and his young son have visited him and stayed at SSAFA’s Norton
House every single weekend.

Due to the fact that neither the L family’s home or any available service accommodation at Richard’s base in Plymouth is sufficiently adapted to meet his care needs, the DMRC cannot discharge him even for short home visits. As a result, the family faced having to spend Christmas apart. However, thanks to the home’s accessible facilities, Norton House was able to accommodate Richard, Hayley and their son for three weeks in December 2015 so they could enjoy Christmas together as a family.

Thanks to the Norton House, Hayley has been able to manage the costs of coming to visit Richard every weekend during his time at Headley Court. She has also mentioned how much her stays at Norton House have helped her to cope and stopped her feeling isolated during this difficult time due to the support and friendship of the home’s staff and other residents.
