WESM Annual Dinner: Honouring Tradition, Building Unity

Event, General, Serving Personnel

Recently the Weapon Engineering Submarines (WESM) branch came together for the Ian Molyneux Annual Dinner – a cherished tradition in memory of Lt Cdr Ian Molyneux GM, held at Faslane.

The event brought together Junior Rates, Senior Rates, Officers and veterans for an evening filled with camaraderie, laughter, and a shared sense of pride across the Submarine Service. Guests enjoyed a moving tribute to Ian, with his wife Gill attending as the honoured VIP guest. The HMS Neptune Volunteer Band provided music to set the tone, followed by an exceptional three-course meal.

WO1 Mark McLoughlin, who has organised the dinner for the past eight years, reflected:

As the organiser of the Ian Molyneaux WESM Annual Dinner for the past eight years, I couldn’t be prouder of what we have achieved together. This event is far more than just a meal – it’s a living tribute to Ian and a celebration of the comradeship that defines our branch.

This year, a deliberate shift was made to Red Sea Rig, ensuring inclusivity and allowing everyone, regardless of rank or background, to feel part of the evening. A unifying highlight was the bespoke WESM/TSF cummerbunds – funded through the generous support of The Submarine Family (TSF) – which became a tangible symbol of pride for the branch.

TSF’s support in funding the cummerbunds didn’t just provide us with a new piece of uniform – it strengthened our sense of identity, preserved a tradition, and gave us a shared symbol of unity.

Harry Thompson, TSF Representative, added:

Without this kind of support, key elements of the tradition could be lost over time. I was humbled by the gratitude expressed by many attendees, who deeply value the continuation of this event and the sense of belonging it fosters.

From heartfelt speeches to shared dits and a port and cheese finale, the evening stood as a true testament to Ian’s legacy and the strength of the WESM community.

The gratitude expressed by attendees was overwhelming, and I share in that sentiment. WESM dinners stay until it Hertzs!

TSF is proud to have supported through the provision of the cummerbunds and remains committed to preserving traditions that celebrate comradeship, heritage, and unity across the Royal Navy and Royal Marines family.
