Twenty-five years ago, on a muddy rugby pitch, two kindred spirits collided – and they’ve been embarking on adventures ever since. Next week, Amy and Queenie from Devon take on RNRMC’s Race Across the UK.
The team is no stranger to success – or eccentricity. Amy, once a 100m Olympic runner and runner-up in Cheese 2004 Table Football Championships, is paired with Queenie, a two-time winner at Paignton International Pie Festival. With credentials like these, it’s fair to say the nation will be watching closely.
“These brushes with glory have prepared us well for the glare of the spotlight,” says Amy. “We know our friends, families and probably a few curious strangers will be tracking our every move.”
The pair is embracing every aspect of the challenge, drawing on years of experience – including successfully navigating their way out of IKEA and uneventfully assembling a Billy Bookcase.
“We have trained for the long and challenging days, late nights and early starts by staying up to 10.23 on a recent over night ferry crossing AND getting up for a 7:50 arrival,” adds Queenie.
“Mental fortitude is another cornerstone of our preparation,” they say. “We’ve honed our decision-making skills by choosing good French wine over bad French tea.”
While some of their claims may be more tongue-in-cheek than others, one thing is certainly true – their fundraising is going brilliantly. Thanks to a series of lively events including wine tastings and quizzes, Team ‘Winging It’ is making a real impact for RNRMC.
We’re incredibly proud to be supporting this fantastic charity, which does so much to help Royal Navy and Royal Marines personnel and their families. It’s an honour to be part of this challenge.
