Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity Volunteer Takes On Race Across the UK Challenge With His Son

Event, Fundraising, General

Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) is proud to spotlight Harry Thompson, one of its dedicated Scottish volunteers from Helensburgh as he prepares to take Race Across the UK, a challenge designed to test resilience, build camaraderie, and raise essential funds to support naval communities across the country.

Race Across the UK invites participants to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, travelling from Edinburgh to Dartmouth without map apps, cars or planes - relying solely on their wits, a map, and what they can carry - all to raise vital funds in support of Naval families.

A passionate and long-standing RNRMC volunteer, Harry has become a familiar face at key events throughout the region - from major moments such as the recent ship naming ceremony in Glasgow, to the emotional homecomings in Helensburgh.

When first approached about the Race Across the UK, he admits he was hesitant. “I initially turned down my good friend Bobby Rennie,” he shares. “But when another friend, Andrew Bullingham, reached out and asked, ‘Are you up for it?’, my wife jumped in with a quick, ‘Go for it!’ That was all the encouragement I needed.”

In true naval style, however, things don't always go as planned. Andrew is now unable to partake in the race due to work commitments. Harry recalls the moment he found out: “I got a call from Andrew, and he told me with a heavy heart that he wouldn't be able to do it.” Harry’s son, Ben, overheard the conversation and instantly jumped in, saying he would take Andrew's place. Since then, Ben has been out walking and navigating via public transport as much as he can. Having already completed his Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award, he is excited to get underway with this new challenge.

Race Across the UK is more than a personal test, it's a way to give back to RNRMC and the wide range of organisations it supports.

Over my 26 years in the Navy, I’ve experienced firsthand the impact of RNRMC and affiliated charities like Greenwich Hospital and HMS Oardacious,” he says. “From family events to community support, their work touches so many lives.

This upcoming challenge represents more than miles on a map, it’s about unity, perseverance, and giving back. “I’m most looking forward to those small, tough moments during the challenge. Overcoming adversity together is incredibly rewarding,” he adds.

His dedication to the cause is clear: “RNRMC has profoundly impacted countless lives within my community. From supporting awards evenings and funding essential provisions at homecomings, to facilitating the refurbishment of the Drumfork Centre and numerous other vital projects in and around the naval base, their influence will be seen and felt for a very long time to come.”

Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity would like to thank all our Race Across the UK participants for their enthusiasm, commitment, and relentless support of our mission to be there for every sailor, marine, and their families - for life.
