Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity has officially broken ground at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard to begin the installation of the Heart of Oak Memory Tree – a moving and permanent tribute to those who have shaped the Royal Navy community.
To mark the beginning of construction, RNRMC visited the historic naval site – just steps away from HMS Victory, the Mary Rose Museum, and the active Royal Naval Base. The visit symbolised the start of an exciting new phase for the project.
Inspired by Heart of Oak, the official march of the Royal Navy, the Heart of Oak Memory Tree will stand as a lasting memorial within one of the most significant heritage sites in Royal Navy history.
The Heart of Oak Memory Tree will feature removable metal leaves, each engraved with the name of someone being remembered by family and friends creating a tribute to their life and a recognition of their service. Supporters can dedicate a leaf through a donation to RNRMC, helping to raise vital funds for the charity’s work with serving personnel, veterans, and their families.
Sam Nicolson MBE, Interim CEO of RNRMC, said:
Every leaf on the Heart of Oak Memory Tree holds a life remembered. Whether they died in action, passed away in service, or are remembered as veterans or family members of those who served, the Heart of Oak Memory Tree stands as a powerful tribute of the enduring spirit and resilience of our naval family.
This project not only honours those who have served but also raises much needed funds to support our serving personnel, veterans and their families, for life. The Heart of Oak Memory Tree invites all generations to reflect on the service and sacrifice that has defined the Royal Navy – ensuring those memories are preserved and celebrated for years to come.
