Captain of the Base, Captain Bill Oliphant, opened the newly refurbished Junior Rates Mess in HMS Nelson, following a grant from both The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) and Leisure Amenities Fund (LAF)

The facility, which is based in the heart of HMS Nelson, was run down, dated and in need of a facelift. With up to 12,000 personnel using the area on a regular basis, it was essential that facilities were improved to be able to cater for this.

LPT Heming, who officiated the refurbishment project, said:

"What the Junior ranks lack is a central facility to call their own, by updating and furnishing the bar to make it a Junior Rates Mess it is envisaged that personnel will have somewhere to go for a coffee, film nights relax and chat as well as some gaming."

Following funding from the RNRMC, the Mess area has been completely transformed. Seating and furnishings have now been updated, new TVs, pool table, dart board and bar now offer a wider range of activities for serving personnel to enjoy in their downtime.
