A Royal Navy Reservist has been recognised with a Herbert Lott Award for using innovative manufacturing techniques to solve real engineering challenges and support Royal Navy operations.
Petty Officer David Cox, a Full-Time Reservist based at HMNB Devonport, works within an adaptive manufacturing facility supporting frontline engineering teams. Alongside his role as a sensors specialist, he has taken a leading role in developing and running advanced manufacturing equipment, including 3D printers and specialist production tools.
Since returning to service in 2025, PO Cox has taken responsibility for expanding this capability, developing new ways to produce hard-to-source components and specialist parts. By applying engineering knowledge and modern manufacturing methods, he has helped overcome supply issues, reduce waiting times and keep equipment operational.
He has collaborated with colleges, industry partners, and defence teams to share knowledge, deliver training, and support other units in setting up their own manufacturing facilities, contributing to the development of new technologies.
These innovations have restored operational capability, reduced costs and provided faster solutions than traditional procurement routes. His work has strengthened engineering support not only at Devonport, but across the wider Royal Navy.
Alongside this, PO Cox continues to perform his core engineering duties to a high standard and is widely respected for his professionalism, commitment and quiet leadership.
His contribution demonstrates how innovation and practical problem-solving can deliver lasting benefits, making him a deserving recipient of a Herbert Lott Award.
