Visitors to Long Hill Road in Ascot are once again being treated to a spectacular festive tradition, as George and Brenda’s garden and woodland Christmas lights shine in support of Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity. This year, the display carries an especially heartfelt meaning.
Since the lights were switched on, George has already raised over £800 for RNRMC.
For around 15 years, George has transformed his front garden into a dazzling winter wonderland. What began as a magical project for his grandchildren soon grew into a community favourite, attracting admirers from near and far. Over time, as more people stopped to enjoy the lights, George placed collection boxes at the gate, turning his festive hobby into a remarkable source of charitable support.
Today, his display includes an extraordinary collection of Christmas figures - around 200 deer, an array of festive characters, and numerous woodland creatures. With the help of his gardener, Andy, the set-up takes nearly two weeks of dedicated effort each year.
This year’s display includes a thoughtful new addition: a screen showing a slideshow celebrating the life of Paul, George’s son-in-law, who sadly passed away in September. The tribute reflects the deep respect George held for him.
Paul served 26 years in the Royal Navy as a highly decorated submariner. His distinguished career included service on HMS OCELOT, TORBAY, and TRAFALGAR, followed by command roles on UPHOLDER, TALENT, and VANGUARD. Renowned within the submarine community, Paul later became a Teacher responsible for the Perisher Course, shaping future submarine commanders. After his seagoing service, he joined the JFHQ to support maritime operations, retiring from the Navy in 2016.
Though he supported many causes throughout his life, Paul always maintained a strong connection to Armed Forces charities. RNRMC, along with Sea Cadets Falmouth and Penryn, were chosen as the beneficiaries of his funeral collection - an enduring reflection of the Navy’s central role in his life.
George’s Christmas lights aren’t the only tribute. Colleagues at the Portland site recently held a Christmas raffle in Paul’s honour, raising an incredible £1,883.38 for RNRMC. Their generosity highlights the high regard in which Paul was held, and his lasting association with naval charities.
