For many Royal Navy and Royal Marines families, Christmas doesn’t come with guarantees. Loved ones may be deployed, preparing to deploy, or recently returned and adjusting to life back at home. Routines shift, emotions run high, and the festive season can feel either overwhelming or isolating.
That’s why this year’s dedicated pantomime performance of Snow White at the New Theatre Royal meant more than just a day out. It gave families time together that they often struggle to find - time to laugh, reconnect, and make memories without the pressure of cost or logistics.
Five hundred tickets were made available exclusively to Royal Navy families living in and around Portsmouth by RNRMC. Parents told us how much they valued having something special they could share with their children, especially during a period that can highlight the absence or unpredictability of Service life. For some, it was their first family outing since a partner returned home after Operation High mast. For others, it offered a moment of joy during a deployment countdown.
The cast brought the classic story to life with warmth and energy. Children were especially captivated by actress Julia Worsley as the Wicked Queen, whose performance had families laughing, booing, and joining in together! Exactly the kind of shared joy many said they needed this Christmas.
The day brought families together who may not normally cross paths, creating a shared sense of community at a time when many feel disconnected. Children left beaming, parents left lighter, and families left feeling part of something bigger than themselves.
These are the moments that remind us why beneficiary-led support matters: recognising what families are navigating and offering experiences that meet them where they are.
