News Blogs RNRMC Community Royal Marines Forces Sweetheart to mark 35th anniversary of the Falklands War with performance To mark 35 years since the Falklands War a memorial service will be help on the islands in September with over 5,000 Naval personnel and civilians attending. Among those attending will be the Royal Marines Forces Sweetheart of Swansea, Kirsten Orsborn, who will be performing on stage as well as visiting the Garden of Remembrance memorial. It's worth noting that while the Falkland Islands are nearly 8,000 nautical miles from the UK, the Royal Navy actively patrols the waters surrounding the Falkland Islands and South Georgia. This has been the case for the majority of the time since the conflict ended in 1982. The RNRMC speak with Kirsten We spoke to Kirsten to see what she has planned in the run up to the performance on the Falkland Islands On being asked why Kirsten supports both the Royal Marines and The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity "I have been supporting the Forces from a young age. At the age of about thirteen, I made my first appearance at the armed forces day in Sunderland. I had such an amazing time and I loved meeting new people. They invited me back the following year which then continued to me performing in Bridgend, Cardiff and Caerphilly over the last 8 years. Since that first performance in Sunderland, I never looked back! I loved performing for the Forces so much, it was my way of giving something back and saying thank you! I continued to make appearances in different events and I also started to record original music and donate all funds raised to different Forces charities. I now regularly visit the Royal Hospital of Chelsea to perform for the Pensioners, I often visit the Royal Marines training bases to perform in their dinners and of course, I'm really looking forward to my big trip to the Falklands in September. In 2014 I was introduced to the Royal Marines Association (RMA) of Swansea to perform for them. After my first performance, in the July they officially adopted me as their Forces Sweetheart and handed me a plaque to recognise it. I am forever grateful to the RMA for all of their incredible support over the years. I will always support the forces in all that I do! I'm so proud and truly honoured to be a part of their journey with them and I hope I can always help them even if it's just with the volume of my voice. Thank you so much to everyone for all of the amazing support! I'm really looking forward to my upcoming events and I do hope with your help I can raise funds to donate to the Falklands on my trip! How did you feel when you heard that you had been asked to perform in the Falklands? "When I was first asked to travel to the Falklands to perform for the Forces, I was so shocked and completely over the moon. It's something I have always wanted to do, a dream of mine. To be able to take my music to them and actually give them something back for all that they do for us every day. It's my way of thanking them." Are you planning to do any other events in preparation for your big performance on the Falkland Islands? "As soon as it hit me that the trip is actually happening, I started planning straight away. I sat down with family and close friends and we had a massive chat over coffee about how we could raise funds to donate to the Liberty Lodge when I'm there. We finally set the dates to an afternoon tea in the Mayors Mansion in Swansea on 23rd March at 3.30pm and also a big Dinner Dance, fundraiser on 28th July in Neath Rugby Club to raise money and awareness for the trip. I have also set up a go fund me page so that my supporters across the waters can also donate to the project. So many fans, supporters, friends and family who have supported me over the years are trying everything they can to help us with the entire project and I am so incredibly grateful!"
