News and Media Blogs Mighty Ducks make a muddy splash at Hell Runner This January, the ship’s company of Portsmouth-based Type 23 Frigate HMS Iron Duke embarked on their annual fundraiser challenge by completing the ‘Hell Runner – Hell Down South’, one of the toughest extreme races in the country. The ten runners who competed in the extreme race are all from the Weapon Engineering and Warfare Departments. Entry to the exceptionally difficult adventure race was coordinated by LT Paul Proctor RN, Paul’s enthusiasm and determination drove the team to successfully raise £415.00 for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity. The course was a long slog over sand dunes, countless mud hills, two river crossings, wading through a chest-deep mud pond and finally culminating in the ‘Bog of Doom’, an icy cold 50m long mud pond lined on both sides with cheering spectators to mark the finish. Charity donations were reliant on some members of the team committing to ‘full immersion’ in the icy cold Bog of Doom prior to finishing the race! However, despite the freezing temperatures and the post-race aches and pains, most of the team have vowed to re-compete in Hell Runner next year and look forward to entering a larger team in early 2018! A massive congratulations and thank you to all of those that competed and raised money for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, a great effort from all, especially so close to Christmas leave!
