Royal Navy Officers' Charity: Multiple Sclerosis

Six years ago, Lieutenant L left the Navy after 24 years’ service following the diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis. His condition steadily deteriorated until, still only 50, he had to enter a care home, where the RNOC assisted with the costs of funding his place. Sadly the condition worsened rapidly and he has now moved to a home better able to cope with his condition. The RNOC has maintained its support through providing a grant that allows him to improve his quality of life.  With our aid he was able to buy a mobile arm that allowed him to feed himself and voice control software that enables him to maintain contact with family and friends through his computer. This has made a huge difference and is replicated in the hundreds of cases we support each year.

Naval Service Sports Charity: Potential Olympians

Lieutenant Kirsty Archibald RN and Marine Arthur Williams are two disabled Naval athletes who have been earmarked by their Sport National Governing Bodies as potential Olympians for 2012.

Kirsty's talent was spotted by the national coach at a wheelchair basketball day at the National Sports Academy in Sheffield and asked to attend further training camps. It was evident that her potential, focus, and ability to take on the challenges of life made her a prime candidate to train with the GB Squad in their run-up to the 2012 Olympic Games. Having initially been loaned a competition wheelchair, a grant of £1,000 from the Naval Service Sports Charity has enabled her to obtain one of her own, allowing her to take part in regular training sessions with the GB Women’s squad.

On taking up wheelchair racing Arthur’s obvious ability came to the attention of the Performance Director (Disabilities) at UK Athletics. Having made extremely rapid progress in the sport under his new coach he quickly grew out of his loaned wheelchair. A grant of £1,000 from the Naval Service Sports Charity has allowed him to purchase a racing model and he is now acknowledged as one of the fastest developing athletes in the sport.
