Robert Robson joined the Royal Navy as a General List Seaman Officer in 1981, before going to London University to read History at Royal Holloway College on a University Cadetship. He saw duty in GLASGOW, YARNTON, BRAZEN and FIFE in various different theatres.
In 1987 he joined Barclays plc where, after a three year business training, he became a front line bank manager. There followed roles in branch Operations, Regional Sales Director, Group Personnel and as Chief Operating Officer of the Large Corporate Banking team. He became Deputy Managing Director of European Business Banking in 1999 and then moved to the Group Strategy team to lead the educational work delivering a cultural change programme to the senior cadre of the Barclays Group.
In 2002 he moved to Barclays Private Bank, where he set up a new role as Global Head of Banking and Credit, followed by two years in Geneva as Head of European Offshore Banking, before returning to the UK as COO of the International Private Bank covering Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
In February 2007 Robert resigned to seek a different focus to his life, and became CEO of The Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity on 1 September 2008. The RNRMC was established by the Navy Board in 2007 as an independent military charity tasked with being a focus for fundraising and grant making to the naval service and naval charities, developing and delivering a unifying agenda for naval charity, and establishing itself as the single overarching focus for naval charity. The charity will dispense around £5m in grants in 2011.
He has been a Governor of The Royal Star and Garter Homes since 2000, where he chairs the strategy committee supervising the £50m transformational plan to build state-of-the-art care homes for disabled ex-servicemen and women. His Directorships include The Officers’ Association, COBSEO (the Confederation of Service Charities) and the Forces in Mind Trust and he is a Member of the Mary Rose Trust. He is a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights.
Robert lives on the South Downs with his wife Amanda, a specialist teacher, and their two Labradors.
After a wide ranging career as a Logistics Officer in the Royal Navy, Digby joined The Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity in March 2011 with specific responsibilities for the daily running of the charity, and all legal and regulatory issues. He is the Charity Secretary. Digby is overseeing all aspects of the expansion strategy, with a particular focus on the relationship with other Naval Service charities. Central to his role is negotiating and promoting effective, efficient best practice in administration and “back office” functions to ensure that the maximum funds are available to disburse.
